Chocolate covered pretzels are the easiest and most delicious treat to make for any occasion.
But this year I decided to make them as hostess gifts. Being that there are so many events to attend during the holidays (and only so many times that you can bring a bottle of wine) chocolate covered pretzels are a yummy treat that everyone will love. You can also personalize them with beautiful packaging (which I will post about later) and by using your host’s favorite candy or chocolate as toppings.
I made a video for those of you who are visual (like me)
And for those of you who aren’t, voila:
40-50 wrapped caramels (unwrapped)
2 tbsp of heavy cream
18 large pretzel rods
chocolate chips to be melted (amount depends on whether you’re coating the whole pretzel or just drizzling – I used most of a large pack of chocolate chips)
assorted toppings – crush larger chocolate bars if you wish to use those
Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper
In a saucepan heat caramels and stir in heavy cream. Remove from heat once thoroughly melted and let cool a little – around 5 minutes
While cooling melt chocolate by either microwaving or placing in glass bowl over boiling water (see video)
Dip pretzels in caramel and coat evenly with a spoon. Place caramel coated pretzel on parchment paper and continue. If you don’t want to add chocolate but would rather add toppings directly to caramel, do not let caramel dry but coat with candy immediately
If you’re adding chocolate, coat the caramel coated pretzel rods with chocolate as you did with the caramel. If that’s too much chocolate for your taste, you can just drizzle the chocolate decoratively over the caramel.
To make them extra decadent, sprinkle toppings on top of the melted chocolate and for speedy results, place them in the freezer for around 5 minutes.
Once cooled place them in clear bags and tie with festive ribbon et voila! Easy peasy hostess gifts!
If caramel isn’t your thing, stay tuned for an even easier treat where we minus the caramel and go straight to the chocolate!
