Every week I look forward to my Thursday night workout at 7pm – and not because I like to workout at night, as a matter of fact I hate it…. I’m a workout in the morning kind of girl. No, I look forward to my Thursday night workout, skipping towards Totum gym, dodging the packed patios and the revellers who cut work early, already a few wobbly pops in, because of one thing and one thing only, and that one thing/person is Mr Julian Ho.
A power pack of energy and agility, Julian is not only a trainer who’s physique would have anyone instantly whispering #bodygoals, he’s basically a life guru who infuses every workout with not only physical motivation but tons of mental. In fact, every week during my workout I find myself stumbling towards my phone, sliding along the screen with my sweaty fingers to type out one of his nuggets of inspiration onto my twitter feed.
I had a chance to chat with Julian about his process, Adidas and what inspires him. Check it out!
1. I know you’re a very busy man and though this opportunity with Adidas is an incredible one, I know you must have said yes for more than just the gig. Why did you sign on to be the Here To Created trainer?
My main hook with the company is my alignment with their vision:
“Adidas strives to be the global leader in the sporting goods industry with brands built on a passion for sports and a sporting lifestyle.”
My vision has always been to celebrate the balance of substance and style, and have them leverage each other to create experiences like no other.
Secondly, their core values are reflections of my own: Performance, Passion, Integrity, Diversity.
These values speak volumes to my actions. “It’s not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you”. I definitely feel that Adidas and myself will stop at nothing to honor this quote.
2. What is your workout philosophy?
“Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”
- David McCullough Jr.
This quote goes much further beyond the term ‘workout’. It is an analogy that can refer to any endeavor. I use this quote to also work inwardly; mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The ‘mountain’ can be any challenge you face, any goal you desire, any pursuit you wish to conquer.
3. What is your favourite way to train?
I see fitness facilities, outdoor fields, gyms, playgrounds, etc, as laboratories in which to experiment. My favourite approach to training is one that is outside the box. I value a diversity of movement patterning, randomized practice, and stimulating creativity. I enjoy training the brain as much as the body because I find they need to be equally as ‘fit’ in order to produce safe and effective results. My go-to is a circuit set of kettlebell, animal flow, dumbbells, woodway treadmill sprints, keiser cable machines, swiss ball, and gym rings (max of 30 minutes of high intensity circuit training). I also love trail running, playing team sports, and bouldering.
4. You’re very inspiring. I love the stories you tell before and after our workouts. Where do you gain inspiration?
Currently, my inspirations come from:
Ted talks, The School of life, Brainpickings, Chef’s Table, Shots of awe, Tim Ferriss. Radiolab, Ted Radio Hour by NPR, Thich Nhat Hanh, Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Marcus Aurelius.
5. What are you Here To Create?
I am here to create elevated fitness experiences. Experiences aimed at building awareness, creating connection, inspiring innovation, and stimulating growth.
