I went to my first Soul Cycle class in New York. I was in school at NYU taking a summer course alone and decided eating my way through the city on the weekend was heading me quickly down the path to the Freshman fifteen. Being that I was more of a mature student than a freshman and that gaining that weight the first time wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, I signed up for a class that I had heard ‘all of the celebrities’ were doing and was instantly converted.
From the moment you walk into a Soul Cycle, you catch the vibe. It’s light and bright and buzzing with the energy of the staff and the anticipation of the soon to be cyclists. Soul Cycle is a group indoor cycling or ‘spin’ class created by Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice that took North America by storm eleven years ago. The class takes place in a dark room lit only with candles and the soft scent of Jonathon Adler’s version of grapefruit. The format is an all -out, give it all you got, spin/dance hybrid that is led by an incredibly fit instructor whom is there to get you moving to the beat and somehow keep you inspired while pushing you to your absolute limit.
When I left my first class I was hooked. Even though it was hard and I could barely keep up, I left with an almost spiritual high fueled with endorphins and positive vibes. I left New York with a new addiction and a sense of disappointment as I knew we had nothing like it in Toronto. I petitioned every now and again for Soul Cycle to come to Toronto via annoying tweets to their handles and after eight years since the first time I tried it, they’ve crossed the border and opened their first of two locations in Toronto!
I brought my girls and went for a ride with Ty last Monday night. After a really long day of meetings and loads of driving no one in our crew of ten was buzzing to get into the class. But then we clipped in, tuned the world out and took a trip to Ty-land. Once Upgrade You started to pump through the speakers and our legs started to roll out we were in the zone and forty five minutes later we stumbled out of class with big grins and full hearts all planning the next time we would meet at SoulCycle for another butt kicking, soul saving class.
