A few weeks ago I visited Niagara-on-the-Lake. Now I know its not some crazy getaway, but I had never really properly been to Niagara on the Lake and it was WAY more fun then I thought it would be!
First off it is beautiful, the homes are gorgeous and the little town and Main Street are so cute! A lot of the buildings are either the originals that date back as far as 1800’s or they have restored the original fronts of the buildings.
There are also a good amount of things to do in Niagara on the lake! Of course (and why most people go) there is wine tasting, you can go on a tour, drive yourselves (just don’t have too much vino if you are driving. But the best way to do it is renting a bike so you can bike around to the wineries. www.winerytoursniagara.com
The Shaw Festival takes place in Niagra, which we were in town for, and went to see ‘His Girl Friday’. There are a ton of great plays to see during the festival and is a great time to plan to be in town.
Some of the cutest B&B’s I have ever seen reside in this little enclave and the restaurants aren’t too shabby either! http://www.niagaraonthelake.com/page/restaurants/Restaurants
We stayed at The Charles Inn and if you like a good Irish pub like I do, I highly recommend the Irish Harp Pub on Main Street. You can do a sampler of Irish beers and the live bands are really fun!
Now if you are a History buff then Niagara is the place to be. Fort George was the scene of many a battle in it’s day, and it’s pretty cool to see. There is also Fort Mississauga, which isn’t as spectacular, but is right on the water and you can see Fort Niagara clearly which is a great spot for photos!
On October 13th it is the official 200th Anniversary of the war of 1812 so I will be going back to Niagara on the Lake (my boyfriend is the aforementioned history buff) We’ll be bringing a group of our friends with us this time. And even though I am not a history aficionado, like my guy, I do think it will be a pretty cool experience and an amazing part of Canadian history to witness.
Of course we will be going back to the wineries and maybe this time we will stop by the falls on the way home.
Imagine we didn’t even see The Falls? That’s a true testament of how fun The Lake can truly be!
I highly recommend going for a night or 2 to Niagara on the Lake, it’s fun for a girl’s getaway, for a romantic weekend with your mate or a group of friends!
Let us know if you have been to Niagara on the Lake this summer or if you plan to go in a comment.

Great post, beautiful pics. I went to Niagara on the Lake with my girlfriends for my bff’s bachelorette in June. We had a great weekend!
I’ve been to Niagara-on-the-Lake so many times but we always tend to look at the shops then move on the Falls. Clearly, there is more to be done! Thanks for the post! I’ll definitely make an effort to check out what else Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer.
Hi Nina & Gina,
So happy you both liked the post. It was a really fun weekend trip, I can’t wait to go back next year or sometime soon before the weather changes!
