I had been wanting to read this book for a while. Mostly because I had a difficult time understanding the mystery behind the much coveted Hermes Birkin bag. Not why people wanted it, or its history (who was more beautiful than Jane Birkin?), but more why people would wait years to be on a list to get the chance to purchase a bag that has a starting price tag of around $9,000.00 and can go up to over $30,000.00
Initially I believed in their supply and demand rhetoric – Hermes only makes so many bags a year,( blah, blah) but when I started hearing that there was in fact no supply issue with the Birkin, but rather there were Birkins-a-plenty, I started to get interested in what was behind this business plan.
Enter Michael Tonello; one of the most successful Birkin re-sellers to walk the earth, pocketing obscene amounts of money through his Ebay Hermes boutique by simply figuring out the Birkin equation. From looking the part, to asking the right questions, to making initial purchases of other accessories to entice the sales person, to the occasional bribe or two; Tonello had the exact formula to leave any Hermes store in the world with one or more Birkins, many times the most ‘rare’ -crocodile.
The book takes the reader on a fast paced journey from Provincetown to Barcelona where Tonello stumbles upon a way to re-sell Hermes on Ebay to a group of avid collectors.
From the first page all the way to the last I was drawn into this hilarious and lighthearted memoir. Tonello knows how to tell a story and the ease in which you flip through the pages leaves you wanting for more when you get to the last. This book is the perfect vay-cay read and if you’re interested in fashion and the crazy world behind one of the world’s most coveted pieces pick up Bringing Home The Birkin.
