Just over a week ago I had the absolute pleasure of attending not only New York Fashion Week but also the US Open on my Amex Ambassador duties. I got to experience these two ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences just like a platinum cardmember and boy does the saying ‘membership has it’s benefits’ apply here!
I flew out of Pearson to start off my trip with the maximum VIP experience. My card enabled me to slide past the long security line and directly into the swank American Express Lounge where I sipped on some complimentary beverages, nibbled on some snacks, and put my feet up while I awaited my flight to JFK.
Day 1: I arrived early to Lincoln Center so that I could take in the full experience, grabbing some shots of the fashion folk out front and then dipped inside to meet my Amex concierge. I was then ushered along with a few equally excited card members to a private area where we were offered champagne or mojitos and delicious canapés. We were invited to have a seat in what felt like a private supper club just behind where the Rebecca Minkoff main fashion show was about to take place. You see we were not only at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, but we were also at Amex’s first ever UNSTAGED Fashion Week experience. You’ve heard me talk about UNSTAGED events before, but they’ve always been about music. This year Amex made the plunge and expanded to include fashion and not only fashion, but the most coveted fashion event of the year!
Having attended Fashion Week before, this experience was miles more luxurious with waiters topping up glasses, a host giving us the low down and fun live streamed interviews with celebs with interviewer Kelly Osbourne. It was like we were backstage and in VIP all at the same time. We watched the show stream live (as many of you hopefully did too online) and as soon as the show was completed in the main tent, the models literally ran over to our room to give us an up close and personal look at the S/S ’14 collection. And if that wasn’t enough, Janelle Monae then performed with her full band! And if that wasn’t enough, Rebecca Minkoff herself then took the stage for a one on one interview with Kelly. INSANE! It was an Amex UNSTAGED event to top all UNSTAGED events – fashion + music = perfection. My table was all a-buzz – praising their Amex Concierge for making this experience possible.
Day 2: My day began at MILK studios for the incredible Louise Goldin show. Aside from the fact that KANYE WEST WAS FRONT ROW!!!- the Amex experience at MILK was equally awesome. With backstage access and a VIP room filled with sweet treats, more champers and a full Glam Squad to keep cardmembers looking fresh – it was worth the stress it took to get back uptown to the Tents for Mara Hoffman.
I’ve been a super fan of Hoffman since I bought my first swimsuit cover up a few years ago. Her prints are always off-the-chain and this year was no exception. Instead of a backstage experience –like the Minkoff experience – this time I was ushered (along with some other pretty stellar bloggers, hello Heart D!) up to the Amex Skybox.
Perched atop the main runways at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week sits the exclusive Amex Skybox – like a fashion freak’s oasis. In the Skybox there are plush chairs, soft lighting and refreshments abound. The Amex concierges are on site to assist in any way – including charging my dying iPhone!
From the Skybox I was able to watch both the Mara Hoffman and Herve Leger shows (drools) unobstructed. Both shows had me dreading the fact that we’re just about to embark on a long hard winter. The only silver lining being that next S/S everyone’s going to look fabulous!
Day 3: At this point I was feeling majorly spoiled and when Amex rang up and said they had scored two tickets to the women’s finals at the US Open, I died. I’m a HUGE Serena Williams fan so the idea that an Amex card can score you tickets to not only the most sought after fashion events, but also the most important sporting events – insane.
The Open was everything it promised to be: exciting, suspenseful and an all ‘round good time. Arthur Ashe Stadium is incredible. Jam-packed with things to see and do – having plenty of time between the Men’s doubles finals and the main event was fine with us. Although we thought Serena would smash Victoria, she really held her own, giving us one amazing show and when Serena won her winning point and did her signature high jump, I’m pretty sure I did it along with her….
After a long weekend of experiencing Amex perks there’s no doubt that American Express goes above and beyond for its cardmembers. Your card becomes like a nice little VIP card that can get you into things and assist you in having experiences that you could only dream of. Fashion week – really an experience reserved for buyers, journalists and the fashion elite – becomes something that you can experience with your girlfriends. Watching one of your sports heroes win her 5th US Open becomes a story you can share for years to come. From the airport to the Open, Amex has you covered!
