Nike has always been a brand that I’ve admired for many reasons; innovation, design, their ability to inspire….. But it’s the fact that the co-founder, Bill Bowerman, is known for being responsible for bringing jogging to North America that I always come back to. How crazy is that? Jogging. He basically created jogging as a mode of exercise because before Bowerman (and eventually Nike, the company he founded with Phil Knight) decided to try and make it catch on in North America, jogging was a practice only done in far flung places like New Zealand….
And from that place of forward thinking and innovation Nike continued and continues to grow. Bigger, faster, stronger.
I was recently invited to New York to check out all that Nike has been working on and what they have in store for us next year at what they called, Nike Women’s Summit.
I didn’t know what to expect. Being in such a competitive business Nike has to keep most of what they do top secret. Myself and around 150 other media descended on New York in a shroud of secrecy with only the promise that we would be wowed. They didn’t disappoint.
Nike took over Spring St Studios and with every turn there was a new innovation or collaboration. After I got over the shock of being included (you can take the girl out of the suburbs….) I continued to marvel at the level that Nike is operating.
The event opened with a fashion show modeled by 27 of the world’s top female athletes (including Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton) and a few models (hello, Karlie Kloss!) The runway moved up and down and the clothing on display made me pray even some of it makes it way to Canada. *please*
The day continued at quite a clip and at times was a little overwhelming. How can one company do all of this? I was moved and impressed at every turn. Some of my favorite things were:
Nike Training Club Updates:
The newest innovation for Nike Training Club (or NTC) are big. Rolling out over the next few months your NTC app will be adding updates like the ability to play on your TV via AppleTV, Google Chromecast or an HDMI cable, it will be made available in a ton of new languages and also for the first time you will be able to communicate with your friends and the NTC community live within in the app. Who doesn’t love agood cheer on? Now it will be live and in real time?
They’ve done the research and discovered that women continue to out number men in gym membership enrollment. Women also love to look good while they’re working out and Nike’s response has been awesome. Not only to innovate with amazing new bras, shoes and high tech gear for every occasion but also by working on killer collaborations with cutting edge fashion designers.
There are so many exciting pieces, colour-ways and prints coming out this year and next that are so drool worthy. From printed tights to a croc embossed jacket, yes please!
I especially fell for Nike X Pedro Lourenço
Nike knows about the benefit of a good collaboration like nobody else. There were a ton of shoe collabs that we saw but the Pedro Lourenco collection was something special. Inspired by everything from couture to technology this collection is not only beautiful but incredibly wearable inside and outside the gym.
And then there are the shoes…
For so many years sneakers were all for the boys, so much so that girls would rock (and still rock) boys J’s. It’s exciting that Nike’s caught on to the fact that we women also have a deep affection for shoes, even if they aren’t stilettos.
Thanks for having me! I left the day feeling a whole new level of inspiration to continue to push the athlete in me.
Can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve next!
