At a time where the celebration of fake beauty is at it’s (hopeful) peak, there is nothing that makes me happier than not only Phoebe Philo’s use of famed writer Joan Didion for her Spring ’15 campaign but also the celebratory reaction to her choice.
Photographed by Juergen Teller in typical Celine style – frames, super chic, big flash – Didion’s image, to me, opens up the conversation on the currency of beauty, our obsession with youth but furthermore our collective need for authenticity. For a company as chic and trendsetting as Celine to push the boundaries and ideals of high fashion and beauty by shooting a cross generational campaign (women of varied ages will also be featured, namely ballerina/ choreographer Marie-Agnès Gillot, 39, teen model Freya Lawrence) says a lot.
We want to be beautiful and stylish and smart, but we also really want to be real. Bravo, Celine, for opening up the conversation, for making us think and for allowing us to celebrate beauty in more than one form.
