I’ve been going to New York Fashion Week as a Platinum Cardmember for a few years now and every year this Cardmember offer ends up being one of my highlights. There’s something about Fashion Week that brings such electricity to a city. A creative buzz fills the streets as fashion mavens trapes up and down the avenues making the concrete their catwalk. But this year I was presented with the opportunity to cross the pond and see how the British fashion set do it and I literally couldn’t contain my excitement.
Back in November I took some time to expand on what living an enriched life means to me which Amex refers to as living the #AmexLife. Living an Amex Life to me is all about living a life full of magical moments. It’s about taking an already cool experience (like travelling to London) and making it not only memorable, but incredible. Going to Fashion Week in any of the major cities in the world is an extraordinary experience but as a Cardmember Amex helped to make it one I will not soon forget. Here are just a few of those magical moments…
London Fashion Week is one of the shortest on the Fashion Month calendar. Usually sandwiched between New York and Paris, London is internationally recognized as one of the remaining fashion weeks that still does an excellent job at promoting young and emerging designers. I was beyond excited to take advantage of this Platinum Cardmember package to see some of the fresh new work coming out, to be able to see what is being forecasted as trends for the year to come.
After an overnight flight to London I hit the ground running. I hopped on the Heathrow Express (which is amazing by the way, 15 pounds to central London!) and headed to my hotel, The Langham. The Langham comes highly recommended on the list of Fine Resorts & Hotels, located just steps away from the insane shopping hub that is Oxford street.
My room was beautifully appointed, overlooking the black and white peaked rooftops of London. A spacious room with a scrumptiously comfortable pillow topped bed, an oversized luxurious washroom and complimentary Wi-Fi. A quick refresh and off to lunch I went.
Chiltern Firehouse is one of the hottest new openings in London. Created by famed hotelier, Andre Balaaz of Chateau Marmont and Mercer fame, there’s a 1-month waiting list but, as usual, Amex’s Platinum concierge hooked me up with a prime reservation.
The Jerusalem artichokes were insane!
And their famed washrooms… Cheeky British fun.
The majority of the Fashion Week shows I was seeing took place at Somerset House. Located south of the Strand and overlooking the Thames, Somerset House is home base for all shows put on by the British Fashion Council. The shows took place in a tent erected in the courtyard of Somerset. In true fashion week style the scene outside the tents was on fire packed with people showing off their personal interpretations of style.
In the buildings that surround the courtyard there are various fun things going on like a pop-up blow dry bar, a yummy restaurant called Tom’s Kitchen and the most exciting feature, an exhibition of over 100 designers.
As part of this Platinum Cardmember packageI got to check out a talk with one of Britain’s leading fashion journalists who also sits as editor of the amazing Gentlewoman magazine. I also got VIP access to the Jean Pierre Braganza show where we were able to see the incredible show.
After the show myself and some other Platinum Cardmembers were treated to traditional afternoon tea service at Tom’s Kitchen and then were given a chance to browse through the incredible exhibition. One hundred of London’s top designer collections were not only on display, but many of the actual designers were available for a chat. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
I particularly died for the jackets weaved with silk at Youjia Jin and the knits at Zoe Jordan (who is now being sold in Toronto at TNT!)
Since I don’t visit London as often as I’d like was at a loss for where to eat or what to check out on my free time but the Amex Platinum Concierge available to help me with a detailed list curated to all of my likes and interests. I had the best avocado toast at Pizza East, incredible drinks at Artesian ( voted the world’s best bar 3 years running – that just happened to be at my hotel), fantastic coffee at Brick Lane Coffee and the yummiest meal I’ve had in a long time at Novikov Italian.
Checking out LFW was not only an amazingly inspiring experience that got my creative juices flowing but also eye opening to how far my card can take me. I got to see all of the latest trends, eat some unforgettable meals and drink one-of-a-kind hand crafted cocktails all while feeling like a VIP. Travel can be fun but can also be incredibly stressful, especially when you’re in a big busy city. Having access to a concierge to help create a ‘must-see, must-try list’ is definitely something I can’t see myself traveling without.
This trip totally brought home the idea of what an #AmexLife is. Enriched, fulfilling and packed with fun.
