Five Things I Wish I Knew Before Getting a Brazilian Wax

Preparing for your first appointment…

If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, the whole ordeal can sound, ugh, intimidating to say the least. The idea of voluntarily walking into a spa and allowing a complete stranger to inflict pain on your happiest of places isn’t the most appealing. Trust—I remember thinking the same thing before my first appointment, but alas, I survived to tell the tale. And that got me thinking about all the things I wish I knew before getting a Brazilian wax. So if you’re a little (or a lot) nervous, keep reading!

  1.    Feeling weird is totally normal.

Before I bare it all, the first thing I wish I knew before my first Brazilian is that being intimidated by it is completely normal. Chances are, you—and a select few other humans—are the only ones who visit your southern hemisphere on a regular basis. But a well-trained, experienced esthetician will help all these feelings disappear faster than you can say, “Wow, so smooth!”

  1.    Beauticians don’t judge.

As long as you maintain good hygiene and you’re clean, your beautician doesn’t care what you look like down there. She’s an expert who sees lady bits all day long, so don’t feel insecure about your body. Her only job is for you to leave freshly landscaped and to make you feel comfortable while you’re there. I definitely wish I had a better understanding of this before my first Brazilian wax, which leads to this next part…

  1.    It’s actually not awkward at all.

A Brazilian wax feels very much the same as any other beauty treatment. It’s a fun way to pamper yourself and estheticians are part of creating that fun vibe. She’ll discuss what you want (full wax from front to back, standard panty line wax, leave a strip or triangle at the front?), and then likely strike up a convo to help you relax and take your mind off the task. By the end of the appointment, you’ll be exchanging Insta handles and looking forward to the next time you get to catch up!

  1.    It’s less painful than you think.

Believe it or not, the first time I had a pedicure I thought it was really going to hurt (*eye roll*, I know). As I sat in the massage chair with a fresh coat of Essie’s baby blue ‘Bikini so Teeny’ drying on my callus-free feet, I felt like an absolute KWEEEEN. This relates to Brazilians in that a lot of the perceived pain is in your head (which is good thing by the way; it’s your body’s natural way to protect you from something it doesn’t know yet). But once you hop on the table and your beautician begins, you’ll realize the temporary pain is definitely something you can handle. Estheticians know how to get the best results with the least amount of pain, so you really have nothing to worry about. Plus, the more Brazilians you get, the less painful they become.

  1.    More benefits than just a bare down there.

Of course the absolute best part of a Brazilian is the super smooth result, but there are actually lots of other benefits too. Waxing is a method of hair removal that’s generally a pretty safe and effective bet for most people, while alternatives, like laser for example, can be pricey and only works on people with dark, coarse hair and a fair skin tone. It’s also better than shaving because it leaves you with virtually no irritation. That means no more razor bumps and burns when you flaunt your cute new bikini at the Scandinavian spa this winter. Waxing also has a way longer lasting result which means you only have to visit the spa about once a month, so any awkwardness or pain you’re worried about are few and far between. Whether you have super sensitive skin, coarse hair or a low pain tolerance, waxing will most definitely leave you with better results than you can even imagine!
