Happy Hump Day, Cowes!
CWC + Friends missed you last week, but we are happy to be back at it again! This week, we share our insightful conversation with our talented friend, Paul Jefferies (A Conversation With Nineteen85: Acclaimed Record Producer and One Half of DVSN on Music, Diversifying Your Portfolio, BLM and the Truth About Owning Your Masters). You may recognize Paul as Nineteen85 or 85, the acclaimed Canadian record producer who is half of the duo known as DVSN. Paul has also produced beats for a variety of artists, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Khalid, Ty Dolla $ign and several more impressive names.
Not only has he worked with some of the biggest names in the world, he is also a savvy businessman who has and continues to work his ass off to ultimately “never be broke again”. Paul expresses how he lived through enough years of hoping he’d make it to payday, this naturally instilled discipline in Paul and led him to self-taught financial literacy. The music industry is an easy world to get caught up in but Paul’s fear dominated his desire to celebrate every win.
Throughout this episode, we chat all about the process of becoming a producer, the secret sauce behind the artists and creatives who come out of Toronto, Paul’s method when working with new artists and the collaboration process between himself and counterpart, Daniel Daley. We also dove into the importance of multiple streams of income and why instant gratification isn’t always the winner. The best part, his intellect allows for a highly engaging conversation on pretty much any topic.
