After a summer of indulgence I’ve been really focusing on my health and incorporating things that easily fit in my life. “Not bad, huh, for some immigrants?” One of my favourite lines from Jay that I like to pull out every time something pretty wild happens. Something wild like a 12 page spread in @hellocanadamag They gave me the freedom to hire who I wanted to make me glam so I shot for the stars with my team @janetjacksonhairstylist @theglamlifeco and finally having a black hairstylist and makeup artist I felt super confident with my skin and hair bc they knew exactly what to do. The incredible @talia_stylist searched for BIPOC designers without much lead time and she was able to get this incredible dress from @gretaconstantine (that I call my hater blocker as I can’t pop my head right down into it with its incredible turtle neck) and jewelry from @omiwoods She also got us my other fave local jewelry designer @_jennybird and has advocated and spotlighted local designers all of her career. she writes personal handwritten letters to buyers requesting not only more inclusive sizing but also more BIPOC representation. Speaking of advocacy, I have to take a moment to shout out @belcourtassociates who as a friend advocates for myself and other women of colour daily. As a woman with crazy credibility in our field she could have done what most people have done to me, written me off as a divorcee who started out as a bartender and has failed many a times. Instead this woman has lifted me up, cheered me on and believed in my talent in a way that makes me want to cry just thinking about it. Thank you, Deb. Finally, this feature means so much to me because @thebiancat took the time to listen to me, allowed me to spotlight what means most to me, my family, my career and volunteer work with @theremixproject and @canadianblackstandard If you told 19 year old me that it would take time and a crazy amount of hard work but I would achieve a lot of my dreams, I don’t know if I would have believed you because I couldn’t see it anyone like me doing it. As I sit here today I hope these pretty pictures translate to hope for one young girl of colour. TIFF, like everything else, is looking a little different this year. That doesn't mean we still can't get glammed up, with nowhere but a Zoom party to go to! This year, my girlfriends and I are creating an occasion to get dressed up and toast to another impressive year in the film industry. Today as I let go of your hand and you bravely fought back the tears, diligently standing in line, ready to take on the first day of grade 3, I took five breaths starring in your pretty green/blue eyes. I want to remember this moment forever. You’ve gone from an extension of my limbs, always pulling, plucking and holding me, to your own little being. Running, singing and dancing to your own beat. Though I was finally able to efficiently get a whole lot of work done while you were at school, I secretly wished you still sat beside me singing your little songs and interrupting my zoom calls. Being a parent is a trippy thing. We do what we think is best with the hopes that our kids will learn to do the same. With all of the ups and downs of the last few months I wish the best for all of us whether we chose to send our kids back or keep them at home. I wish for a swift end to all of this uncertainty and support for our teachers. I wish for continued foresight to take deep breaths and catch more of the moments in the moment. 🖤 Dammit! I need to stop crying. Take me back to the dock! 🤣

A Certified Intimacy Educator, Shan has such an incredible wealth of knowledge with the perfect ability to distill said knowledge in a fun and digestible way there’s no wonder why she has already published 2 books and has her own show on @quibi On today’s episode we spoke about dating digitally (the average millennial spends 10 hours a week on a dating app), relationship building (having empathy for the person you’re dating), open relationships (you can close them too, you know!), communication, women’s bodies, CLIToracy (my fave new word) and so very much more. Though there were so many things we were ‘supposed’ to do this summer, the things we able to do were pretty amazing. Expectations lowered, cadence slowed, joys abundant. To be honest, I could have never imagined fishing with my daughter being instructed ever so patiently by my besite’s dad like he had tried to do with us so many years ago. On a Tuesday. As the horrible news continues to roll in, I have found the only way through is with a steady focus on the small, magical moments that we would have otherwise skipped past at the top of the year. What we are continually reminded is that life as we know it is fleeting. Hold onto the little bits. The belly laughs, the run on sentences, the quick calls that turn into hours, the little flashes of brilliance, the catch (and subsequent release) of your first fish, the heat from someone else’s hand.
