You are all caught up!
Thinking about my Dad tonight. Thinking of all tha Thinking about my Dad tonight. Thinking of all that he’s had to stomach and shoulder and swallow. The jokes that he couldn’t laugh at, the ones that were at his expense. The places he wasn’t allowed into and the ones he was made to feel grateful to be accepted in. The countless times he was pulled over for no reason in our neighbourhood or on the way to put back together someone else’s child’s face in the middle of the night and even his hospital badge couldn’t protect him.
Thinking of all he protected us from. Thinking of his trauma, his PTSD, his feelings around the feelings he was never allowed to have and the words our generation has created to explain them. Thinking of how regardless he taught us pride; he taught us joy. Tonight I will go to sleep grateful that my father is still here and praying for the family of George Floyd. Tonight I will go to sleep broken that we are still here in a world that has spent far too long protecting a society and institution that believes that the lives of only the chosen should be served and protected. Tonight I will pray for all of the beautiful Black men that not only deserve protection but also the basic joy that so many so easily take for granted. 🖤 Rest easy, Mr Floyd. I love you, Dad. Thank you for all that you continue to do for all of us.
I can’t find the words. @carrollforcouncil poste I can’t find the words. @carrollforcouncil posted this thread on Twitter written so eloquently by @_dagray he and found the words for me. I stopped praying a long time ago but this past year I found myself praying every night. Praying for the safety of my father on his early morning walks. For my brother driving alone in his car. For the beautiful collection of incredible Black men and women that I call my chosen family. I pray every night that they are safely away from harm. Away from the harm of the hands that are empowered by our governments and our tax dollars to serve and protect us. I pray that these deaths don’t continue to happen in vain and in hashtags and that the people it doesn’t directly affect start to feel even the slightest compassion for our people. The change will only ever happen if Black lives actually matter to anyone but us. I’ve looked at the demographics of the people who follow me and over 70% of you identify as white. I am begging you to care, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you or how insignificant you feel your voice feels. My family’s life literally depends on it and I promise if the tides changed, I would do it for you and yours.

But seriously, if you keep up over here, it's hard for Harlowe to change out of her same two outfits, especially now that we are all back to WFH life and virtual school. She did a fashion show in this trendy two-piece from @hudsonsbay earlier this week and she hasn't taken the fit off since. I swear, I feel like I'm learning to let go of new things every damn day LOL. Anyone else find their kid getting super attached to certain pieces of clothing? Introduce them to something new by visiting the link on my story to see #HBKids Spring trends, where there's something for everyone! #ad
When they tell you to go back inside. Literally l When they tell you to go back inside. Literally laughing and crying at this Ponderosa. #lockdown400
You are the chattiest person I have ever met but i You are the chattiest person I have ever met but in the midst of all of this mess and in the words of the almighty Anita Baker, you bring me joy 🖤
When George Floyd was murdered last year I remembe When George Floyd was murdered last year I remember waiting for friends and family to post their outrage. And I waited and waited. Over the past little while we have seen horrendous acts against Asian people come to light and I found myself almost paralyzed. Paralyzed in a way I’m sure many of you were last year and on one hand I understood and on the other I was so disappointed in myself. So many thoughts have been going through my mind. I grew up with Filipinos being my closest of friends in a town where we were part of a small collection of minorities in a sea of white. Though I felt very much a part of that community, it wasn’t lost on me how the falsehood of a ‘model minority’ was perpetuated and there were many times where Blackness was deemed undesirable by elders in off handed comments. I also come from Jamaica where when colonizers figured out they needed more labour (aside from the enslaved Africans that they had torturously brought over to work for free) they brought in indentured workers from Asia and India, paying them pitiful rates (but rates nonetheless) which created a false hierarchy that we still struggle to dismantle to this day. But what I worked through back then I now realize is not something to hold against another minority group but rather something to be addressed squarely at the only system that benefits from any of this, and that is the system of White Supremacy. When we are pitted against each other and allow space for hate between us, White Supremacy thrives. Speaking up against what is wrong is always the right thing to do. If you haven’t already, I urge you to seek out the education that you need to truly understand what is happening to the Asian community today. I have, and if you need a place to start click the link in my bio for a full list of resources that I found incredibly helpful.
Also, the podcast: This Matters - How The Model Minority Myth Fuels Anti Asian Racism and White Supremacy - is a very insightful listen. #stopasianhate
